Since the first classes were taught at Cal Poly in 1903, the departments of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Science, Dairy Science and Poultry Industry merged into the present-day Animal Science Department. Today, the department offers students the opportunity to apply the principles of animal biology, molecular biology and other life sciences to a variety of species including farm animals, exotic animals, laboratory animals, as well as their own pets.
Extensive facilities provide the resources for students to learn the principles required for success in areas such as veterinary medicine, animal biotechnology, animal facility management, animal nutrition, and animal food manufacturing. Additionally, the department engages with current animal industry through faculty involvement research and educational programs.
