Between the Species (Journals)

Between the Species is a peer-reviewed electronic journal devoted to the philosophical examination of the relationship between human beings and other animals. While most articles are ethical inquiries, others raise issues involving metaphysics, epistemology and other areas of philosophical investigation. Between the Species is an open access journal: users have the right to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles.

About our back issues

Many of the articles from the original print version of Between the Species (1985-1996) are available on this website in Volumes 1-12. Articles from the original print version with compound issue numbers, such as Vol. 10, Nos. 3-4, are compiled into the leading issue number, e.g., Vol. 10, Issue 3. Complete issues of the online journal from 2002 to 2010 inclusive are compiled in Volume 13.

Ethics and Animals (Journals)

Ethics and Animals suspended publication in 1984 and continues in part by Between the Species.

The Ethics and Animals is a quarterly journal published in March, June, September and December by the Society for the Study of Ethics and Animals (SSEA).

The Society for the Study of Ethics and Animals has been established to provide for the exchange of information and to provide arenas for discussion and debate between those interested in ethical questions concerning human treatment of nonhuman animals. The Society will not take sides, and is committed only to open discussion.

Feminist Pedagogy (Journals)

Feminist Pedagogy publishes original scholarship on higher education teaching strategies and approaches from an intersectional feminist perspective.

Focus (Journals)

Focus is an online, open access journal published annually by the Department of City & Regional Planning at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo since 2004. The journal is dedicated to the professional practice of city planning and urban design, publishing peer-reviewed research, case studies, exceptional student projects and opinion and editorial pieces each year. Its key mission is to keep professionals, students, and alumni informed about recent and changing planning issues. Focus has won several awards of excellence since its inception, including recognition from the American Planning Association and the Urban Land Institute.

Journal of Threat Intelligence and Incident Response (Journals)

The Journal of Threat Intelligence and Incident Response is a peer reviewed journal that publishes original research and findings in the domains of threat intelligence and incident response. It bridges the gap between industry practitioners and academia, provides a forum for domain experts to share research that informs decisions, helps to prove or disprove theories, and grow and evolve research in related industries. It publishes articles relating to the following aspects of threat intelligence and incident response:

    Paideia (Journals)

    Created during the 2013-2014 school year as a senior project, Paideia is the Political Science Department’s academic journal, which features undergraduate student papers as well as accomplished alumni.

    The journal serves four purposes:

  • Showcase student work and alumni success
  • Connect alumni with current students
  • Create opportunities for students to enter the professional world through academic publication
  • Promote the successes of the Political Science Department through tangible representation

    Roots (MultiCultural Center)

    sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies (Journals)

    sprinkle: an undergraduate journal of feminist and queer studies is a peer-reviewed journal devoted to the diverse voices of emerging scholar-activists, authors, and artists in Women’s, Gender & Queer Studies, and related fields of inquiry. First established at McGill University in 2007, sprinkle has been published annually at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo since 2013 and welcomes submissions from around the world.

    Funded by a Cal Poly Instructionally Related Activities Grant and supported by the College of Liberal Arts, sprinkle provides undergraduate and early career graduate students with learn-by-doing opportunities in academic publishing that include writing, editing, managing, and reviewing scholarly, activist, and creative submissions.

    Symposium (Journals)

    Symposium: Student Journal of Science and Math

    Symposium: Student Journal of Science and Math is the student academic journal of the College of Science and Mathematics at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

    Symposium was founded in 2013, and is published annually after the inaugural issue in Spring 2014. The publication was suspended after 2017.

    Symposium is a student-written and student-run, open-access academic journal of science and math. The journal’s annual issues will promote discussion on the science topics that the students of the College of Science and Mathematics (COSAM) investigate in their classes, labs, research, and senior projects. Symposium also features students’ unique experiences through Cal Poly’s hands-on motto, “Learn by Doing.” Pieces submitted to Symposium are peer-reviewed by the Review Board, which is comprised of COSAM students.
