Abstract/Summary

This paper, "A Composer's Guide to the Clarinet," is intended to help composers and orchestrators of any level of composing experience. Through this guide, a composer can begin to understand the clarinet's capabilities and limits. It is not meant to be a comprehensive guide, but rather a source that gives a composer a better understanding of the clarinet as an instrument in general. This includes the basics of the instrument, how the instrument fits into ensembles, its history, and the different types of clarinets. While this guide focuses on the B-flat clarinet, the most common clarinet, the information discussed in this paper can often be applied to the other types of clarinets.
