Abstract/Summary
S is for Sun Valley is a children’s alphabet book that celebrates the unique landscapes, wildlife, and culture of Sun Valley, Idaho. Each letter of the alphabet highlights a local feature such as mountains, rivers, or community traditions through original text paired with hand-painted illustrations created in collaboration with my father. This project addresses a gap in children’s literature by providing young readers with stories and imagery that reflect their small-town environment, fostering a stronger connection to place and community identity.
The book supports early literacy development by combining engaging visual and textual storytelling which aids language acquisition and cognitive growth. Additionally, it promotes environmental awareness and cultural appreciation among children by embedding local themes into accessible educational content. The project also explores self-publishing as a way to share culturally meaningful stories and aligns with current industry trends that empower independent creators. Ultimately, S is for Sun Valley aims to enrich children’s reading experiences by celebrating the character of their own community through art and narrative.
