Abstract/Summary
The purpose of this paper is to carefully analyze how news organizations have reported on impacts to women nationwide as a result of the Dobbs v. Jackson’s Women’s Health Organization (2022) ruling by the Supreme Court. This case overruled a landmark case in judicial history, Roe v. Wade (1973), which protected the act of abortion through constitutional interpretation. There are several news reporting outlets, which include the Los Angeles Times, Houston Chronicle, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Minnesota Star Tribune which are included in this paper to aid in discussing abortion and real life stories that women in the U.S. have shared as a result of restrictions for abortion accessibility. A content analysis was conducted in order to identify frames that arose from news reporting stories, exploring the shared experiences of women. This paper explores how it is that abortion has been framed throughout the years, and as a result, how societal and legal changes have reshaped the framing of abortion in today’s society by covering stories that examine current policies that have affected the personal lives and health of women nationwide.
