Abstract/Summary
This case study examines the use of ChatGPT on the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (hereafter referred to as Cal Poly or Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo) campus as part of the system-wide CSU AI Initiative. This is a follow-up study to previous work in which the researchers examined AI usage and gratifications during the early rollout of the CSU AI Initiative during Spring 2025. Using a qualitative approach, we used semi-structured interviews (N = 24) to gather in-depth perspectives on AI usage, gratifications, concerns, and definitions of AI literacy from students and faculty. Findings indicate that while students adopt ChatGPT for clarification, organization, and writing support, faculty incorporate it into instruction. Findings further reveal the recognition of potential risks associated with the integration of AI into academics by both groups, as well as the lack of clear guidance for its use. There also appears to be an emerging shared definition of AI literacy among Cal Poly students and faculty, but no clear framework for building it. This study highlights potential issues related to AI use, regulation, and a lack of understanding of the tool, and offers practical suggestions for students, faculty, and the broader Cal Poly institution.
