Abstract/Summary

Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) wall systems are used very often in all types of construction including commercial and residential. With this said, the scheduling logic behind their installation can often be unclear for students and people new to the industry. The purpose of this project is to analyze CMU construction sequencing and demonstrate how it integrates within an overall project schedule. This study was conducted using interviews with industry professionals, review of CMU manufacturing processes, and development of a simplified Critical Path Method schedule in Microsoft Project. Information from CMU professionals regarding manufacturing processes and lead times were incorporated based on industry explanations and discussions. The results identify key sequencing relationships, including layout, block installation, reinforcement placement, grouting, and inspection as well as the importance of coordination with other trades. Findings show the proper sequencing and planning significantly influence efficiency of projects and schedule reliability. To enhance learning outcomes, a quiz and applied assignment were developed to reinforce key scheduling concepts, manpower calculations and duration planning. This project provides an educational framework that improves understanding of CMU construction scheduling and helps with application in the real world.
