Abstract
The purpose of this project was to evaluate and improve livestock welfare practices within the Cal Poly Rodeo Program while supporting the program's core values of student success, western heritage, and program excellence. Livestock play a critical role in collegiate rodeo by providing educational opportunities, athletic competition, and hands-on learning experiences for students. As public awareness of animal welfare continues to increase, rodeo programs must demonstrate responsible stewardship and ethical animal management practices.
This project assessed current livestock management procedures, identified areas for improvement, and implemented educational and operational strategies designed to enhance animal health and welfare. Key performance indicators were developed to evaluate livestock health, facility conditions, animal handling practices, and student participation in welfare-focused training. Benchmarking activities included reviewing practices utilized by other collegiate rodeo programs, livestock producers, veterinarians, and animal science professionals.
Implementation efforts focused on student education, facility evaluations, routine livestock monitoring, and increased accountability for animal care responsibilities. Results demonstrated improved awareness of animal welfare principles among student-athletes, enhanced communication regarding livestock health concerns, and improved facility maintenance and monitoring practices. The project reinforced the importance of proactive animal management, continuous improvement, and shared responsibility among students and coaches.
Overall, this project demonstrated that meaningful improvements in livestock welfare can be achieved through education, evaluation, and consistent management practices, ultimately benefiting animal well-being, student learning, and the long-term success of the Cal Poly Rodeo Program.
