Abstract

This AGED 539 portfolio documents the comprehensive development, management, and continuous improvement of the Bakersfield–Del Oro High School Agricultural Education Program. The portfolio demonstrates alignment with California Agricultural Education Quality Criteria through evidence of curriculum planning, Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) implementation, FFA leadership development, program management, recruitment strategies, advisory committee collaboration, professional development, and long-term program planning. As a newly established agricultural education program, emphasis is placed on creating sustainable systems, increasing student access to experiential learning opportunities, and building a strong foundation for future growth.

A central component of the portfolio is the Quality Criteria Improvement Project, which focused on Quality Criteria 5: Facilities. The project involved the design and implementation of a Library Garden to provide equitable access to plant-based SAE opportunities for students who may not have adequate resources at home. Through interdisciplinary collaboration with the school librarian, Agricultural Mechanics students, Floral Design students, and FFA members, the project incorporated sustainable construction practices, student research, and hands-on learning experiences while addressing a critical program need. The initiative demonstrates how strategic facility improvements can enhance experiential education, increase student engagement, and support the successful completion of SAE requirements.

The portfolio further highlights the integration of California Career Technical Education standards, leadership development through FFA, and experiential learning through SAE projects while emphasizing continuous professional growth and reflective practice. Documentation of recruitment efforts, advisory committee functions, professional development activities, and departmental planning illustrates a commitment to building an inclusive, innovative, and student-centered agricultural education program. Collectively, this portfolio reflects the application of effective educational leadership, program management, and instructional practices that promote college and career readiness while supporting the long-term success and sustainability of the Bakersfield–Del Oro High School Agriculture Department.
