Abstract

Magnetotactic algae of the genus Anisonema (Euglenophyceae) have been isolated from a coastal mangrove swamp in northeastern Brazil. The magnetotactic response is based on a permanent magnetic dipole moment per cell ~7 10^-10 emu. Each cell contains many magnetite (Fe₃O₄) particles organized in chains.
