Abstract/Summary

Preparing and performing David Maslanka’s works for wind ensemble offers pedagogical value for students playing bass clarinet. An examination of A Child’s Garden of Dreams (1981), Symphony No. 4 (1993), and Symphony No. 7 (2004) will serve as a case study because of these works’ educational value in teaching student bass clarinetists within the context of a wind ensemble. Each of these pieces offers technical and expressive challenges for the bass clarinet and a student will gain insight into the musical language of David Maslanka in his application of the instrument within his wind ensemble compositions. These pieces are selected across a range of Maslanka’s compositional career, representing the musical style and compositional methods he developed.
