Intent:

The intent of my project is to research the lives of migrant, farm-working women who have migrated from Mexico and now live and work in California. The other purpose is to present the findings to the Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo communities through interviews and artistic expression.

Methodology:

In order to research and present the lives of these women, I plan to do the following:

A) Interviews: I plan to interview 3-7 immigrant women who have immigrated from Mexico and now work in San Luis Obispo County, California about their experiences of the process of immigration and their everyday lives in Spanish.

B) Translate Interviews: After the interviews, I plan to translate them to English to be able to share the research and their experiences with English speakers.

C) Paint Portraits: In addition to the interviews, I will also paint a portrait of each of the women.

D) Exhibition: Once the interviews, translations and portraits are completed, my partner and I will organize an exhibition where the paintings and interviews are on display.

Statement on Outcome:

This project reflects my experience as a Modern Languages and Literatures student at Cal Poly by not only using the Spanish language and translation skills I have learned at Cal Poly, but more importantly incorporating a broader world view and cultural sensitivity encouraged by professors, literature, discussions and community involvement that have been an integral part of my time at Cal Poly.
