Abstract/Summary
Forged carbon fiber compression molding remains a relatively under-researched manufacturing process. While there are documented processes online, the options are few and far between. Our sponsor and case-study user, Dr. Mello, tasked us with the goal of researching and developing a process for forged carbon fiber compression molding through means of modifying his prototype of a bike pack handlebar cradle (figure 3). This prototype will allow us to create tooling which will be used to manufacture a handlebar cradle that can withstand larger loads and more extreme environments using our developed process. A handlebar cradle is a structural support for small loads that attach to the handlebar of a bicycle, primarily meant for long-distance, overnight bicycle trips. This project will focus primarily on the development of our process and design of tooling, but with a small emphasis on product design.
Existing industry designs are expensive, vary in material, and differ largely in weight [11]. Our product design will look to reduce these variables while offering greater strength, durability, and versatility across different bike models and user needs. This product would include both a handlebar cradle and hinge bar clamps with shims which will allow adaptability to different handlebar sizes. This project will be carried out by four mechanical engineering students from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The team is called Mello’s Mellow Mentees, and this team consists of Victor Javadoff, Timothy Villafana, Nathan Pittiiglio, and Cooper Starr.
