Abstract/Summary
Generally, children’s materials in early literacy are not well represented in terms of culture, especially for bilingual and Latinx children. For example, many alphabet books include the translation of the alphabet in Spanish and English; however, these materials often do not include the translation of the alphabet in a cultural context. Instead, they often separate the two languages and create a disconnect between the two for bilingual children. Graphic communication is a significant area of concern in this case, as the use of typography, composition, and color can greatly impact how the reader processes the information being communicated.
ABC Lotería is a project that aims to create a bilingual alphabet book based on the traditional Mexican game of Lotería. Instead of using the game of Lotería as a translation of the alphabet from English to Spanish, the project aims to create a unique and effective tool for teaching children the alphabet by using the visual system of the game of Lotería. By using the visual system of the game of Lotería, the project aims to create a more effective tool for teaching children the alphabet and promoting literacy in a cultural context by showing saturated colors, simple illustrations, and numbering.
