Abstract/Summary

The significance of this project lies in its potential to deepen the understanding of how paper choice influences color reproduction in printed photographic works. As digital photography continues to advance, the demand for high-quality physical prints remains strong, requiring photographers and designers to carefully consider how materials impact the final image. This research provides valuable insights into how different paper substrates—specifically silk text stock and satin text stock—affect color accuracy, vibrancy, and tonal subtleties when printed using a standardized color management workflow.

By highlighting the interaction between printer limitations and paper characteristics, this project helps photographers and print professionals make informed decisions when selecting materials for photo books, fine art prints, and other high-quality printed works. The findings underscore the importance of understanding how print media can enhance or alter an image’s intended look, reinforcing the need for strategic material choices in professional print production.

As a photo minor, I have developed technical expertise in color theory, composition, and visual storytelling. This project allows me to apply these skills in a practical setting, bridging the gap between my knowledge of digital photography and the physical aspects of print production. By testing and documenting the impact of paper finishes on color reproduction, I am expanding my understanding of how different materials contribute to the final presentation of an image. This hands-on experience not only strengthens my ability to produce high-quality prints but also provides a valuable resource for other photographers and designers striving for true-to-life color fidelity in their work.
