Abstract/Summary

This project aims to create a simulation in virtual reality that replicates an activity that older adults are familiar with and presents an objective for the user to complete. The simulation will monitor the user’s cognitive functions based on their performance. The functionality of the designed program includes, but is not limited to: continuous tracking of cognitive behavior, skipped steps, and completion times. The program will take in relevant data and provide results on the monitored tasks and give the user a conclusion for further action. The application of this simulation will not be used as a medical device or in any medical areas; the device and program will be used as a resource for older adults looking for a reliable method to verify if they must seek further medical assistance regarding their risk of early onset dementia/Alzheimer's. The end goal for this project is to create an affordable, widely available test for those who are concerned with decline in their cognitive abilities. Sponsoring this project is NeuroNetworks, with Katie Wong serving as the main sponsor and Kaitlyn Le as the co-sponsor. Both Katie and Kaitlyn are Cal Poly seniors (as of 2026) and are from the psychology and Liberal Arts and Engineering departments, respectively. The standards for identifying dementia/Alzheimer’s for this project are derived from a living document of biomarkers and measures provided by Katie and Kaitlyn in order for the engineering team to design and code into the simulation.
