Abstract/Summary
This project is developed in response to the American Planning Association’s Student Planning and Design Competition 2026 and fulfills the senior project requirement for a Bachelor of Science in City and Regional Planning from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
The site consists of the core development area and the framework area, both of which reflect the historical significance and prospective future of the area. The framework area contains multiple industrial sites; Lyndon Street formerly housed multiple textile and manufacturing warehouses that supplied businesses along Livernois Avenue of Fashion. The site also includes the Intervale-Roselawn Park, which has recently received an $800,000 grant for upgrades and improvements, and former Andrew Young High School. Meanwhile, the framework area includes the Davison Steet – I-96 interchange and a City of Detroit Public Works facility. The framework and core development area are also located near the Joe Louis Greenway and Livernois Avenue of Fashion.
Each proposed project should facilitate economic revitalization, historic preservation, social justice, and environmental improvements. To address social and environmental justice concerns, the proposal emphasizes potential to reimagine the I-96, affordable housing solutions, and job creation. While the project looks to the future, historic preservation is also a notable priority in relation to industrial uses and surrounding neighborhoods, such as the Oakman Boulevard neighborhood. Connections to major roads and the Joe Louis Greenway provide opportunities to reimagine active and sustainable transportation.
The deliverables can be divided into four main sections: existing conditions analysis, framework vision, core development area plan design, and plan implementation. Each section includes individual chapters with writing sections and visual diagrams and plans to convey the proposed project’s vision, goals, and designs.
