Abstract/Summary

This senior project focuses on addressing food insecurity in the Mid-City region of San Diego, California, by proposing strategies to increase access to healthy, affordable food options. The two recommendations are to re-establish a community farmer's market with city involvement and to establish a mobile produce market. These initiatives aim to bring fresh, nutritious food directly to underserved neighborhoods, promoting better health outcomes and community resilience. The recommendations are based on the past success of a community-run farmers' market that had to be discontinued, as well as the demonstrated effectiveness of an existing mobile produce market run by a local nonprofit in increasing access to affordable produce in underserved areas, though with minimal coverage in Mid-City. By leveraging the City's resources, expertise, and collaborative partnerships, these recommendations strive to increase affordable and equitable access to locally sourced produce, support local agriculture, and foster vibrant community spaces. The proposed approaches emphasize collaborative governance, strategic site selection, vendor recruitment, affordability strategies, community engagement, and sustainable funding models.
