Abstract

“College students don’t have to be music majors to participate in [band]. Only about quarter of the membership in [band] are music majors; the rest are students majoring in a variety of academic subjects...These enthusiastic students choose [band] to play their instruments1,” Doris Valliant, author of Going to College , explains. To choose to be a part of the band program at a university may be about fulfilling one’s enjoyment of playing their instrument, but it is also about the service and important role they provide, influencing and impacting the university. Thus, allowing college band programs to be the success that they are.
