Abstract/Summary

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) constantly strive to find the balance between maintaining efficiency and high-quality therapeutic treatment. Now, with the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), another layer is added into the mix. Many questions and concerns are being voiced about how these technologies will reshape the professional practice. Guided by two research questions, this project interviewed ten practicing SLPs regarding efficiency and the future of AI. Through thematic analysis, five central themes emerged: flexibility with unpredictability, AI’s usefulness for documentation and materials, ethical and professional concerns, commitment to lifelong learning, and the human element. Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DOI) can be applied as well to help understand why and how individuals accept new technology faster than others. This study highlights the need for continued research and training on these topics, shares how AI can support SLPs, but most importantly, expresses the incomparable value of human connection in an AI-enhanced future.
