Abstract/Summary

Sustainable approaches to the waste generated in construction demolition have been on the rise over the past two decades. In this case study research project, the demolition waste of commercial tenant improvement projects from two separate companies across multiple projects was documented and analyzed. This case study was inspired by a motivation to gain a better understanding of what waste is typical in tenant improvement remodels, what is being done to repurpose this waste and what obstacles currently stand in the way of better waste management practices. After conducting extensive research and analysis of current waste trends in the construction industry and gathering observations from industry professionals, a case study format was derived to interpret the diversion data gathered from separate companies. This research paper benefits the reader with an analysis on the different ways that waste is typically recorded in the industry, how this waste is disposed of, interpretation of data from waste generated in case study projects and potential approaches to demolition waste from tenant improvement projects going forward. In the case study, tenant improvement projects were found to have higher percentages of drywall and steel, while having a drastic reduction in percentage of concrete waste generated.
