Abstract/Summary
City Farm SLO is a non-profit educational farm that focuses on creating clean produce and educational farm work environments in San Luis Obispo, California. The farm can provide its community with learning programs for the youth, hands-on experience in farming practices, and livestock care. The work was set out for this project across two quarters where we improved the existing sheep pen so that the volunteers and livestock who use the pen can enjoy the area much more comfortably and safely. The overall project scope included several improvements which all required initial designs, coordination with the farm and its volunteers, keeping the livestock outside the working area safe, timelines, logistics, and cost estimates. The construction itself was split up into five different tasks. Those included, creating a 50 cubic yard sheep hill, an exterior vehicle gate, an exterior access gate, a front catch pen, and the back corral/protective fence. These improvements were going to allow the volunteers to maintain and care for the livestock much more efficiently and safely through new entry points and convenient proximity to the food. Additionally, the back corral was a huge improvement for the volunteers, as it gave them an easy route to catch the sheep inside the large pen for shearing.
