Abstract/Summary

The Hackathon is an annual event hosted by construction management students at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. The event aims to redesign a piece of safety equipment to make it more user-friendly, safe, and enjoyable, and provide equitable safety for all genders. The subject of the hackathon held in April, 2024, was head protection for construction workers, primarily hard hats and helmets. Head protection is a critical PPE item that impacts every worker on a job site - which is why it was chosen for a redesign. The 2024 hackathon event was centered around inviting industry members to come and work together to redesign the head protection collaboratively with students and faculty. A room was reserved where tables, hacking materials, and food were provided. In this space, three groups worked to create new models that addressed various issues with standardized hats and helmets. Of the three designs, one was more futuristic and technology-based while the other two were ideas that could be easily implemented today. The unanimous opinion after the event was that more research must be conducted and action needs to be taken to make head protection more user-friendly and inclusive.
