Abstract/Summary

The SLO Newman Catholic Center is a Catholic Church that serves the students of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Cuesta College. Around 300 students attend Catholic Mass every Sunday here. While searching for a Senior Project, I approached the Priest and Admin staff of this organization and asked if there was anything I could build for them. They informed me they were gifted this tile mosaic of the Lady of Guadalupe they wanted to showcase in their backyard. They asked me to design and build a holy monument that could exhibit this beautiful tile mosaic. After 6 months of active design development and planning, I designed a 4’ wide by 7’ tall structure that incorporated a black tile façade and earth-toned brick columns to present the tile mosaic. Scopes for this project included rebar, concrete, CMU, tile work, and brick laying. Once the architecture was complete, I estimated, scheduled, planned, and built this structure. This project turned out successful as the structure was neatly constructed and it showcases the beautiful tile mosaic. Through this design build project, I gained important experiences and lessons I will utilize in my future construction career.
