Abstract/Summary
Local non-profit, City Farm SLO, recently presented an opportunity for four Cal Poly Construction Management students to complete senior projects to construct their vision of a “Garden for All.” This paper will focus on the design, preconstruction, and construction processes necessary to complete the shade structure. The project will provide much needed shade to an outdoor classroom area where City Farm SLO hosts farm based education programs all year round. The completion of this senior project required thorough design, estimating, coordination, and construction efforts, while keeping safety and sustainable building practices at the forefront of every decision. This was particularly important since the site was open to active educational and agricultural spaces throughout the course of construction. Special consideration was given for the structural design as well, given the undesirable soil conditions and high wind loads found in the area. Funding was acquired as a joint effort by all four students participating in Garden for All projects. Although coordination between these projects was integral, the design, estimate, and construction of each project was executed by each student independently. Offsite prefabrication of several components was essential to turnover the final product in a quick and seamless manner.
