Abstract

Both irrigation and drainage (I&D) are vital to the proper development of crops. Irrigation is the application of water to plant roots to supply moisture needed for optimal plant growth. It complements water that is available to crops through precipitation and the moisture stored in the soil. Irrigation schemes have been used since times immemorial to enhance the availability of water at the crop root zone.
