Abstract
This report reflects on the Cal Poly Rodeo Program's alignment with the National Standards for Sport Coaches, showcasing a comprehensive approach to athlete development across multiple critical domains. Emphasizing a well-defined coaching philosophy, the program promotes sportsmanship, ethical behavior, and academic success. Personalized coaching addresses the developmental stages of athletes, ensuring a balance between their academic and athletic roles. The program employs effective teaching methods, clear communication, and constructive feedback to foster a positive environment and build strong coach-athlete relationships based on mutual respect and trust.
The coaches possess deep knowledge of rodeo skills and strategies, utilizing psychological techniques to enhance performance and mental toughness. The program is well-organized with clear policies, efficient event management, and effective budgeting and fundraising strategies, ensuring adequate funding for major events like the Poly Royal Rodeo. Regular performance assessments and self-evaluations help track athlete progress and improve coaching strategies, maintaining the program’s high standards.
This holistic approach, including a commitment to diversity and inclusion, ensures the program meets and often exceeds national standards. The Cal Poly Rodeo Program’s continuous professional development, result-driven practices, and adherence to the 42 standards have made it one of the most sought-after college rodeo programs. Prioritizing academic and personal growth, ethical behavior, and holistic development, the program upholds its prestige and integrity, ensuring the success and well-being of its athletes.
Throughout the year, specific projects focused on improving animal health and welfare, particularly for student-owned horses boarded at the Cal Poly Rodeo Grounds. New management processes, including mandatory stall checks, revised boarding agreements, and sand refill days, significantly enhanced stall quality and animal welfare. These efforts reinforced the program's values and improved its reputation, demonstrating a commitment to exemplary care and management practices. The successful implementation of these processes highlights the program's dedication to maintaining high standards and promoting the well-being of both athletes and animals.
