Abstract/Summary
Organizations like the Interfraternity Council (IFC) have a hard time with telling a comprehensive story of the positive impact they are making to Cal Poly as well as to the SLO community. Our fraternities spend thousands of hours collectively to serve the local communities, and we collect metrics on volunteer hours, how much funds we raised, etc. However, these are usually communicated in a disjointed way through social media, emails and so on. So the various community stakeholders don’t get the full picture, and the negative perceptions around partying far outweigh the good we are doing.
As IFC president, I want to turn this around and use my skills in UX design and graphic communication to reframe the perception of Greek life. My project addresses the communication gap we have today with the communities by creating a website that will combine visual storytelling, use information hierarchy principles and present consolidated metrics. The goal is to have a central mechanism to showcase IFC’s contributions and impact to the surrounding communities. The users of this website will include IFC members, college administrators and members of the SLO community. I plan to get user input in the beginning to build prototypes. Then I will conduct usability testing to get feedback. My final design will incorporate this feedback. After the website has been launched and is in regular use, I will work on soliciting feedback from community partners.
