Abstract/Summary

This project attempts to facilitate my personal engagement with the local Spanish-speaking community of San Luis Obispo by broadening the scope of which the local public-serving organizations are able to serve this community, as well as the bilingual English-and-Spanish-speaking inhabitants of the local area. My goal in completing this project is to expand the resources available to the Spanish-speaking inhabitants of SLO, as well as the families here with individuals of varying degrees of Spanish-speaking and English-speaking abilities. In order to do so, this project is comprised of my translations of multiple documents from the County of San Luis Obispo Public Libraries from their original form in English into Spanish, as well as my translations from Spanish into English of documents from the organization Madrinas para Latinas USA. The first step I took when carrying out this project was reading the documents over in order to make sure I had at least a general awareness of their meaning. Then, I began to translate them, by making use of both my knowledge of the two languages as acquired throughout my education, as well as the textbook, Introduction to Spanish Translation by Jack Child. Additionally, I occasionally also turned to online English-Spanish translation websites for help with my work, however, only while exercising caution. I attempted to avoid any error inherent to such platforms by cross-referencing multiple different platforms when making use of them. This project is of the utmost interest to me because it gives me the opportunity to put my bilingual skills that I have harnessed during my time as a Spanish major to good use in order to serve the local Hispanic/Latinx community.
