The International style developed in Europe and the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. Dominant in Western architecture during the mid 20th century. The most common characteristics are rectilinear forms; light, plane surfaces stripped of applied ornamentation and decoration; open interior spaces and a visually weightless quality created by cantilever construction. Glass, steel and reinforced concrete are the characteristic construction materials. More widely used for commercial and institutional buildings than for residences.

Building named for donors Alex Spanos, aerospace engineering alum, entrepreneur and San Diego Chargers owner, and his wife, Faye. Their donations have supported the arts and athletics at Cal Poly.
