Abstract/Summary
This project took place on a non-profit community farming space called City Farm SLO which provides opportunities for local small scale independent farmers to farm and provide crops to the community. Our project provided improvements to the livestock pen that they have on the farm which is home to chickens and a flock of sheep. The main goal of this project was to provide a better living environment for the sheep including a 50 cubic yard sheep hill, a vehicle access gate, a side gate, a front catch pen, a back corral, and protective fencing for a guava tree. Within each of these scopes there were a series of design development, implementation, scheduling, cost estimation, and coordination with the owners to ensure we placed as little stress upon the animals and volunteers as possible. The goal of these improvements was to assist the volunteers and their tasks by shortening the amount of distance needed to walk via the side access gate, as well as provide a more amicable access route via the side vehicle gate. The front catch pen and back corral will also serve to assist in making the shearing of the sheep much easier and safer for the volunteers. Finally, the sheep hill’s purpose is to provide the sheep with a raised platform to scan for predators.
