Abstract/Summary

The utilization of heavy machinery is essential to the success of all construction projects, but the dependence of traditional diesel fuel contributes significantly to the carbon footprint of the industry. Biodiesel presents a cleaner, more sustainable alternative, yet its adoption across construction sites remains limited. This paper will examine the current use of biodiesel by contractors and explore key barriers preventing its implementation. A series of interviews with industry professionals responsible for fuel and equipment management were conducted to collect various insights and perspectives on the alternative fuel. This study focuses on identifying obstacles such as biodiesel cost, availability, compatibility, and performance restraints. Among the interviews conducted with industry professionals 1 interviewee utilized biodiesel while the rest relied on traditional diesel. The results of the interviews showed that the primary barrier in the adoption of the alternative fuel was the cost compared to competing options. Participants also expressed the unknown reliability of biodiesel and the risks of damaging the equipment they undertake when utilizing biodiesel. Lastly, participants expressed concerns when storing biodiesel at large due to its short shelf life.
