Abstract/Summary
This paper presents a detailed analysis of an information session coordinated by Jack Abernathy with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) on May 14, 2026, at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo. An Army Corps of Engineers info session creates a critical step for undergraduates where they have a professional environment to network with industry professionals and explore unique career paths that may have not been previously considered. The presentation exposed attendees to the history of the Corps of Engineers, employee occupations, and USACE’s varying mission sets. A representative from the USACE Sacramento District brought forward professional construction experience, the Corps of Engineers values, real world projects, and helped facilitate a question-and-answer forum. The question-and-answer portion doubled as a networking session for students to gauge interest in potential internship and employment opportunities. This was the second Corps of Engineers sponsored info session held at Cal Poly, the previous event having occurred three years earlier. It is highly encouraged that Construction Management and Engineering undergraduate students continue to conduct similar info sessions on a consistent basis to sustain and strengthen the bond between Cal Poly and the Army Corps of Engineers.
