Abstract/Summary

A buddy bench was designed, constructed, and installed at the Shasta Meadows Elementary School in Redding, California. A response to loneliness and bullying in schools, the buddy bench is a physical and nonverbal way students can identify the need for companionship on a school playground. By sitting on the bench, students, teachers or school administrators will see them and can come over to spend time with them. Grounded in personal connections and a deep understanding of the school's ethos, the buddy bench aims to foster empathy, inclusion, and support within the student community. Through collaborative efforts with school staff, students, and stakeholders, a design was agreed upon, which prioritized functionality, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Challenges including budget constraints and weather delays were overcome. Lessons learned from the project underscored the importance of community engagement, clear communication, and adaptability in overcoming obstacles and achieving shared goals. Ultimately, the Buddy Bench is not only a physical addition to the playground but a testament to the school's commitment to nurturing a supportive and inclusive environment where all students feel they belong.
