Baseball incorporates the violent motion of throwing as a main act of physical exertion. The shoulder joint is vulnerable to injury during this movement. The overall purpose of this study was to produce a rehabilitation program for injured overhead-throwing athletes and have it evaluated by healthcare professionals. A paper and pen style questionnaire was sent through the mail to a network of professionals in California. Eighteen of the 20 questionnaires were returned. The quantitative feedback of the Likert scale questions indicated that the program was effective and usable while the qualitative feedback indicated the opposite. The additional comments allowed experts to direct their criticisms towards particular aspects of the program. The conclusions are based on the qualitative comments and states that the program is not usable or effective. The recommendations are to conduct more research, make the immediate changes advised by the professionals, and improve the validity and the reliability of the questionnaire.

This study examined the definition of adventure tourism, theories of place attachment, and conducted a satisfaction and motivation survey for Non-Typical Outfitters (NTO). The purpose of this study was to determine the motivations, satisfactions, and place attachment factors when hunting with NTO. Zoomerang, an online survey company, was used to conduct the survey and further calculations were conducted through Microsoft Excel. Overall, NTO clients were all male, satisfied, had experienced other outfitters, and would return to hunt with NTO again. Major conclusions included that all place attachment factors (use-oriented and emotional) were considered neutral and top areas of satisfaction were: lodging accommodations, ease of planning the trip, knowledge of guides, and safety of hunt. Finally, a major recommendation for NTO was to continue to survey their clients in order to maintain and improve their business.

For the past ten years the summer Concerts in the Park series has grown in popularity and importance to the community of Paso Robles. Providing more than entertainment, this special event brings together the community and unites people across gender, age, and racial lines. With the recent economic recession, this research was aimed at providing information for the administrators of the event to aid in the sustainability of the concert series. The purpose of this study was to assess the demographics and use of services of participants at the Paso Robles Concerts in the Park series for the summer of 2009. The survey was conducted at the first three concerts using an observational checklist to record information for overall demographics, dance floor and concession usage. Data of the demographics were tabulated to determine frequency and percentage of race and age group broken down by gender. Demographic trends in usage were presented to suggest recommendations for future concert planning.

Camp staff are the heart of summer camps and can affect how the summer runs. The purpose of this study was to identify the motivations for staff to work at residential summer camps with special regard to any differences in motivations between staff who attended camp as a camper and staff who never attended camp as well as between international and national staff. This study used cluster sampling measuring 21 possible motivations. A link to an online survey was sent to eight camps as identified on the American Camp Association website. The top six motivations for staff to work at camp are helping others and giving back, having fun, interesting work, respect and like the camp director and other staff, the opportunity for personal growth, and the opportunity to work with youth. There are statistically significant differences for four of the 21 motivations among staff who attended camp as a camper versus staff who never attended camp. There are also statistically significant differences for four of the 21 motivations among international and national staff. Camp directors and administrators can use these conclusions to better market jobs to potential camp staff.

Research shows the main factors that influence student attendance to performances are social status, motivation, and perception of time, whereas the main factors for attending sport games are team identification and social networking. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence Cal Poly students’ decision in attending sporting games versus attending performances at the Performing Arts Center. The researcher collected data from 250 students in nine classrooms during Cal Poly’s Spring Quarter. This study found that students claim to more frequently attend games and have a higher interest in attending games than performances. Social networking was a top motivation for students to attend games and lack of time was a common reason for not attending both games and performances. It is recommended that Cal Poly Arts and Cal Poly Athletics better advertise game and performance times, as well as discounted student rates, and offer incentives for student participation.

Millennial generation students are a growing market for the travel and tourism industry,
yet tourism marketers lack research regarding travel habits and motivations for them. As
a result, the travel and leisure industry have not been able to capitalize on this revenue
stream. The purpose of this study was to explore the beliefs, motivations, and attitudes
that millennial generation students have about the benefits of travel and leisure. Topics
for the literature review included motivations and attitudes, and qualitative research.
Essays on motivations and beliefs of travel and leisure were assigned in fall 2009 to the
RPTA 214 class and submitted electronically over Blackboard. Of the original 22 essays
12 were randomly selected and converted into a master copy to eliminate names. The
researcher analyzed the data qualitatively by scanning for word usage and context. The
results indicated that the major beliefs, motivations, and attitudes for millennial
generation students were: the whole experience, education, freedom, and personal
growth. These findings can be used by the travel and leisure industry to better target the
millennial generation college students.

In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed, prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disablements. In 1992, Cal Poly redesigned its Recreation Center to make it accessible for all students. However, few programs exist for this population. The purpose of the study was to conduct a needs assessment of Cal Poly recreational sports and programs for students with mobility impairments. In the spring of 2010, a survey was administered and analyzed. Participants indicated their desire to recreate in both inclusive and segregated settings, programs they prefer, and their lack of knowledge about currently offered programs (Activity4All). The findings can be applied to the Recreation Center so programs can become tailored to individual needs. Cal Poly has an obligation to provide additional recreational, sport, and fitness programs to its impaired population. Inclusion and more programs should be offered to encourage change and the promotion of future activities.

Senior projects are designed to provide college seniors with a capstone educational experience. While some colleges and universities require students to take on a thesis format of a senior project, others require an applied physical product, such as fieldwork. Studies recognize benefits and downfalls to both types of senior project formats. California Polytechnic State University’s Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration Department requires that students within the major complete a two-quarter research and development thesis assignment to fulfill a senior project. In May of 2010, 90 students and alumni completed a questionnaire that measured the opinions of Cal Poly RPTA’s senior project requirements. Based on the findings from the survey, alumni rated 19 agreement items higher than current students, ultimately agreeing that the RPTA senior project adequately prepares graduates of the major. Key conclusions made from this study include the fact that after students finish the senior project process and begin their careers, they may be able to appreciate the senior project.

Teen programs in community recreation have seen a decline in participation in recent years. Adolescents present recreation professionals with the challenge of designing programs that are enjoyable and developmentally stimulating. The purpose of this study was to assess the motivations of San Luis Obispo adolescents to participate in community recreation programs. This study was conducted at Laguna Middle School in San Luis Obispo by conducting two focus groups, one with seventh grade students and the other with eighth grade students. It was found that students are both intrinsically and extrinsically motivated by factors such as competition, an established history with the activity, social aspects, and performing. Adolescents have a negative view of the local recreation department but enjoy participating in extracurricular activities. Recommendations regarding future research include using a multifaceted approach to data collection and obtaining a larger sample size. The recreation department should involve adolescents in the planning of teen activities.

The purpose of this study was to assess the marketing of selected Central Coast summer collegiate baseball teams and their relation to fan attendance. Sport marketing plays a vital role in industry because of the quantity of resources that are allocated to it. Sport spectator psychology was investigated to determine spectator attendance trends. Trends in sport marketing were examined to determine the current state of the industry. The data were collected from the Santa Barbara Foresters, San Luis Obispo Blues, and San Luis Obispo Rattlers. Each of the team’s general managers were interviewed, and self-administered questionnaires were distributed to spectators at the teams’ home games. The findings showed that each of the teams appeared to have a fairly equal distribution of male and female spectators and a good mix of younger and older spectators. Spectators participating in this study indicated that a family friendly atmosphere was the most important aspect to them when determining if they would like to attend a game, and the financial focus (i.e., for-profit versus non-profit) of the organization did not appear to dramatically affect fan attendance.

The purpose of this study was to assess fan behavior at middle school age female and male AYSO soccer games in San Luis Obispo. The subjects of this study were spectators (i.e. coaches and parents) of AYSO. The researcher and the research assistant attended six games during October 2010. At each game, notes were recorded on comments and behaviors, both positive and negative. After the data were recorded, it was found that a majority of spectators were positive, however there was an occasional negative remark or gesture. There were also instructional comments classified as neutral. Recommendations for future research include using a larger age range of subjects and attending additional games.

With the current 2011 economic recession in America, this study evaluated its affect on the Farmers’ Market attendee demographics and purchasing motivations. Using a questionnaire distributed to 200 participants at Farmers’ Market, this study concluded that most people are motivated by price when shopping for produce and the majority of Farmers’ Market attendees’ spending behaviors have been affected by the economic recession. Furthermore, this study found there is a preference for organic produce to be bought at the downtown Farmers’ Market instead of at a general supermarket. It is recommended that the vendors at the San Luis Obispo’s downtown Farmers’ Market lower their prices on produce, so it can be more affordable to more attendees during this current 2011 economic recession.

Ten phone interviews were conducted during winter of 2011 interviewing hikers from 2009 or 2010. Results indicated that thru-hikers have difficulty with communicating the experience, new routines/structure, meeting social expectations, and loss of community during readjustment. Character development, an increased sense of confidence, and change in personal care, were all life changes from the AT. Hikers miss being outside, the physical exertion, the community of the trail, and the simplicity of life. It was unclear if depression is experienced during readjustment. However, subjects were motivated towards other long term goals from hiking the AT. This study shows that hikers feel a strong connection to the trail, thus more efforts should be taken to protect such an important place to many individuals.

Youth sport administrators and coaches strive to create a positive atmosphere to help young athletes develop as individuals. Yet, many youth sport organizations are challenged with few resources or expertise in developing training models for coaches. The YMCA of San Luis Obispo is a progressive organization committed to developing an effective training model for coaches. The purpose of this study was to assess the changes in YMCA basketball coaches’ behaviors and attitudes towards youth development principles associated with youth sports. This study was conducted through follow-up surveys with YMCA youth basketball coaches. Through the follow-up surveys it was found that coaches were able to develop new styles of coaching and strategies for interacting with their players based on training skits viewed at the pre-season meeting. Two major findings were the changes in the coaches’ feelings towards running for punishment and punishing all players for individual’s actions. Recommendations include expanding the training skits and developing a more comprehensive training program for coaches so they know what is expected, understand what athletes should be receiving, and have ongoing resources to call upon throughout the season.

Skateboarding began in California over 50 years ago and has grown internationally. The purpose of this study was to assess the behavior of park visitors at Los Osos Skate Park. This park was fully supervised and this study can serve as a tool for park management. The researcher observed the skate park during operating hours throughout April 2011. The subjects of this study were park visitors actively skateboarding, or passively watching. The dominant demographic for skateboarders were adolescent males. This study found peak times were weekdays afterschool, adult park visitors display the most positive behavior, and middle school park visitors display the most negative behavior. This study also found that a supervised skate park may deter illegal behavior throughout park grounds. However, this study recommends that more observations be conducted both during and after operating hours, and the researcher should be unknown, all to ensure the most accurate observations.

The purpose of this study was to identify the motivations and barriers of Cal Poly Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration (RPTA) students when participating in intergenerational recreation activities. With the population of senior citizens in America growing, this study assessed young Americans' ideas and beliefs about interacting with seniors through recreation. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to approximately 80 RPTA students. The findings indicated that the subjects are interested in participating with seniors through recreational activities but are limited by time, resources, and the location of such activities. Additionally, it was discovered that if subjects were to partake in such activities they would want to play games, do arts/crafts, and converse with members of the senior community. It is recommended that a program be implemented between schools and senior centers that provides intergenerational recreational opportunities through an elective course that’s offered at Cal Poly. These activities will potentially enhance social, mental, emotional, and physical behavior of multi-generations.

The California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration (RPTA) department offers students the chance to attend various professional conferences annually. The purpose of this study was to assess the motivations of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo RPTA students to attend professional conferences. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire on the Cal Poly campus. The findings from 80 subjects indicated a high interest in attending conferences; the top motivating factors to attend professional conferences were networking with professionals, job opportunities, and the relation of the conference to the respondents’ concentration. The lowest motivational factors were educational sessions, past experiences at conferences, and getting away from school. The RPTA department should offer more details to students about conferences to provide students the opportunity to draft their own budget and research attendees of a conference.

Tourism has played a major role in Lebanon since its peak period of 1930-1974; sometimes subsiding as a result of war and conflict, but always rebounding at least to some extent. Lebanon’s touristic appeal includes its geographic location between the East and the West, its varied landscape (beaches and mountains), its hospitable and diverse population, and its well loved cuisine. The focus of this study was food and wine initiatives across the country, and their role as related to the traditional tourism industry. The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of the nature of regional and community based initiatives within the interrelated sectors of food and wine tourism in post-war Lebanon. Data was collected in January 2011 through personal interviews with experts in the field. Findings revealed a need for greater support of the food and wine industry, as it has proven to be a sustainable alternative to traditional touristic development strategies.

This study examined the interest level for a potential intramural sports program at Allan Hancock College (AHC). Other factors such as the time of day, activity, and the financial obligation students and faculty were willing to pay for participation were analyzed. In the spring of 2011, a self-administered questionnaire was administered to AHC students and faculty. Participants indicated a high level of interest for intramural sports. Almost half of the sample population indicated a desire to pay $25 a semester per team participation in intramural sports. The findings may assist administration at AHC to develop steps necessary for the implementation of an intramural sports program.

Mountain biking has become an increasingly popular sport over the past couple of decades. Despite its popularity, some land managers struggle to understand and keep up with the evolving and heavy use of mountain bikes on their trails. The purpose of this study was to examine the motivations, needs, and demographics of mountain bicyclists in the West Cuesta Ridge Area of the Los Padres National Forest in San Luis Obispo, CA. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires on site, at two different trailheads. From a sample of 36 subjects, findings included their demographics and preferred trail qualities. The key qualities were reported to be single-track, natural scenery, variety, flow, and technicality. Also researched were the differences in motivational factors between different riding types and skill levels. Overall, the most important motivations included enjoyment, exercise, and natural scenery. Land managers and advocacy groups should use this information as a tool to provide for their end users; and also use this study as a model to conduct similar research in their respective mountain biking areas.

When I Grow Up and the Furaha Community Centre have partnered together to provide children of the Huruma slum with an opportunity to attend school and hopefully escape the life of poverty. The purpose of this study was to determine what factors contribute to student success on the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education Examination, and if the program funded by When I Grow Up is addressing factors that will empower students to succeed in their education. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire and interviews with students and staff from the Furaha School. The findings indicated that a student’s health, weight, BMI, age, and number of years they had attended school significantly correlated with higher KCPE scores. Recommendations include children entering school at a younger age, having them complete as many years of primary schooling as possible, and continuing to collect data at Furaha and from other schools in Kenya to increase the sample size.

With the ever growing number of planned events around the world and the vast number of attendees, comes the potential to negatively impact the environment. The event industry is perfectly suited to reduce this environmental impact by incorporating sustainable practices into their special events. The purpose of this study was to assess the use of sustainable practices by event planners on the Central Coast of California. This study was conducted through the online survey application Zoomerang.com. The results of this survey indicate that 80% of respondents understand the importance of sustainability and15% were uncertain if sustainability is an important factor when planning a special event. This may be due to the fact that participants are not well informed on certain aspects of sustainability or that they do not pertain to their particular event. The aspects of sustainability that were considered most important by respondents were recycling and serving food from local farmers. Carbon offsetting was considered the least important aspect of sustainability. The findings indicate that most of the sustainable practices being incorporated by event planners on the Central Coast only meet an acceptable level of importance, which indicates that event planners are not using sustainable practices to their full potential.

Data were collected through an online questionnaire. Thirty-two females and five males participated in the study. Previous literature suggests that motivation can be understood through internal factors that push travelers from within and pull factors of the destination that attracts travelers. According to the findings of the study, students are mostly motivated to travel in a group because of social reasons, inclusive packages, and an increase in comfort levels. The most significant constraints keeping students from participating in group travel are the price, lack of independence, and an itinerary that is too restrictive. The RPTA department has an opportunity to offer scholarships for student travel, increase awareness of international group trips, and create a mutually beneficial itinerary that considers student needs.

Snowboarding evolved in the 1960s for people who wanted a change from skiing and to differentiate themselves from their parents. Since its creation, snowboarding has been dominated by males. This may be explained by its establishment and creation by males and the relationship of snowboarding to alternative cultures, where masculinity in style, speech, and behavior generally excel. The purpose of this study was to analyze the gender perceptions in the sport of snowboarding. This study was conducted through self-administered questionnaires. The results of the survey indicate that there are gender inequalities in snowboarding and that gender perceptions do vary by gender. Overall, males and females think that females tend to be more cautious and respectful on the mountain than males. Both genders think that males are better snowboarders than females. Recommendations from the findings are to utilize in-group volunteers to encourage appropriate behavior and to create co-ed teams, events, and competitions to promote equality.

A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to participants at a local bass fishing tournament. Thirty-six respondents completed the questionnaire. The results indicated that boat inspection procedures do not necessarily cause bass fishermen to displace. This study found that fishermen are likely to avoid recreating at a Central Coast lake in fishing practice conditions rather than in tournament conditions, and are likely to avoid tournaments at their least favorite lake if boat inspection procedures take too long. It is recommended that Central Coast lake counties assess why the boat inspection process is not consistent in duration among these lakes, and land management agencies should consider implementing uniform inspection procedures at all three lake counties.

Many students choose to engage in international study abroad opportunities during their time in college. Research on study abroad motivations and benefits and integrated curricula was reviewed for this study. The purpose of this study was to examine Cal Poly Departments that have integrated or incorporated study abroad programs into their curricula. Eight face-to-interviews were conducted from April to May of 2013 regarding Cal Poly Departments’ international program structure and logistics. Results indicated that exposure, understanding of the international and global world, understanding cultural diversity, new perspectives, and personal awareness were benefits of students’ international experience. The findings show that programs differ depending on the unique needs to each department and that there is no structure common among all programs. The study’s findings display the importance of providing students with international opportunities and provide Cal Poly professionals with a sample of the current study abroad programs available for students within each department’s curricula.

California and its Central Coast is an extremely popular destination for international and non-Californian U.S. travelers. The purpose of this study was to determine the motivations and perceptions of international and non-Californian residents who may travel to the Central Coast of California. Data were collected through an online questionnaire. One hundred and seventeen subjects participated in this study. Non-Californian and international tourists are motivated to travel to the Central Coast to visit friends and family, and to discover and learn about an unknown destination. Perceived destination is a large reason why people choose to travel to California and the Central Coast. The most popular activities and destinations on the Central Coast that respondents were interested in were driving the Pacific Coast Highway, visiting Monterey, Big Sur, and Santa Barbara. The high costs of travel to and within California also deter people from choosing it as their destination.

Weddings are significant life events. It has become essential for brides to stand out with unique weddings. These brides turn to popular trends to create the best weddings. The purpose of this study was to assess the future trends in wedding planning among selected California wedding planners. Fifty planners were sent an email with a link to a questionnaire regarding future wedding trends in California. Out of the 50 planners contacted, 10 responses were received. It was found that all regions in California had similar future wedding trend responses related to “glamorous”, “1920s”, or “vintage” themes. The responses from the wedding planners also showed only a small difference in future wedding trends compared to current trends. It is recommended that future studies use a larger sample size and explore wedding trends within specific regions of California.

There are many different factors that can potentially impact spectator attendance rates, including competitive balance, star players, and the stadiums being used. The impacts of these factors on spectator attendance rates differ in various professional sports leagues. Major League Soccer (MLS) started in 1996, and has emphasized creating higher spectator attendance rates. Information on spectator attendance was gathered using a best practices comparison guide. Findings of this study showed that star players positively impact attendance in the MLS and strategies put in place for creating high competitive balance in the MLS are working. This study recommends that the MLS continue to use the strategies regarding competitive balance, and that they allow for the addition of one more start player per team. The purpose of this study was to examine spectator attendance strategies for major professional sports leagues in an effort to assess and improve the strategies employed and adopted by the MLS.

Programs designed for adolescent girls have an additional ambition of closing the gender gap that still exists in physical activity levels. The purpose of this study was to determine the best practices of sports-based youth development programs worldwide that are designed specifically for adolescent females. The researcher compared program elements, lesson elements, and evaluation methods of each program with recommendations from the literature. The main instruments used for these comparisons were the published curricula of each organization. Results showed minimal variance in program elements but substantial differences in lesson elements and evaluation methods. The researcher recommended creating international standards for research-supported lesson elements and incorporating scientific measurements into the evaluation process of all sports-based youth development programs designed for adolescent girls.

Multi-national hotel chains have thousands of hotels and resorts all over the world. Despite their many differences, one thing they all have in common is the need to advertise. The purpose of this study was to research the advertising techniques of each chain in order to determine the best practices for this business sector. The researcher found that many of the chains were inconsistent with their advertising platforms, rendering their efforts ineffective for acquiring and maintaining customers. Key recommendations were that a company only keeps advertising platforms if they are able to maintain and manage them well, to ensure that television advertising be a focus for the chain as a whole, and that print advertisements target as diverse of an audience as possible.
