From the beginning of the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century, Martin Luther (1483-1546), German theologian and founder of the Lutheran church, recognized the power of music to convey messages of faith and hope.[1] At a time when the future of the Protestant church was uncertain, music provided the medium of communication needed for a global campaign for Protestantism. The messages of Luther’s hymns survived the Reformation and continue to be used in Christian music of the twenty first century. Through a comparison of five hymns by Martin Luther “Ach Gott von Himmel sieh darein,” “Aus teifer Not schrei ich su dir,” “Nun Freut euch, Lieben Christen G’mein,” “Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort,” and “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott,” and five songs by different contemporary Christian artists, including “Your Love is a Song” by Switchfoot, “Forgiven” by Skillet, “Light Up the Sky” by The Afters, “Hanging On” by Britt Nicole, and “Something Holy” by Stellar Kart, it is evident that these messages of faith have persisted over hundreds of years.

Fugue

This paper looks at the development of the viola through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and considers why it has been used to introduce fugues more and more often. The viola has historically been an unimportant filler instrument, but beginning in the nineteenth century, and continuing to the present day, it has been given an increasingly important role in contrapuntal orchestral and chamber music. This study considers twelve pieces in which a fugue is launched by the viola.

Prologue

The term “Occidental” is derived from the Latin locution occidens, which literally refers to the setting of the sun in the West, and is antonymous to the term “Oriental” which also finds its origins in the Latin terms for sunrise, oriens (East) and orior (to rise). These geographical distinctions are entirely ethnocentric to the Roman Empire, which first claimed its province in Egypt in 30 BC. Referring to the rising of the sun over the East in relation to the Roman Empire, “Oriental” has evolved over time to be a subjective term that is dependent upon the biased lens of western European empires involved in colonial mandates over civilizations in North Africa, the Mediterranean, Arabian Peninsula, and greater Asian continent. In his book Orientalism, the Palestinian-American literary theoretician Edward Said discusses the connotative effects of looking through a Eurocentric lens which distorts the actual reality of the places, peoples, and customs in the Near East and Middle East. Said claims that “despite its overreaching aspirations [in literature and the humanities] Orientalism is involved in worldly, historical circumstances, which it has tried to conceal behind an often pompous scientism and appeals to rationalism.” An important critique, Said’s book highlights the artificial creation of a cultural dichotomy between West and East. While differences in ideological thought, religion, and politics have arisen from this divide threatening the relationship between East and West, the arts, and in particular music, have flourished. Influenced by sounds of the Occident, some Arab art musicians and composers have chosen to embrace this “other” element in their music. At the same time Western-European classical musicians and composers have produced a wide array of Orient-inspired music. In doing so both have challenged tradition and forged a unique musical dialogue between East and West. This program observes this musical dialogue between Occident and Orient, and the way in which these juxtaposing music cultures gaze upon one another.

From birth--possibly even before birth--the amount and array of external stimuli profoundly affect a child’s cognitive and linguistic development. In addition to verbal communication from parent to child, singing proves to be an integral aid to a child’s development of speech and language, allegedly due to repetitions of words and rhythms. Nursery rhymes are, from infancy, among the most commonly presented forms of musical stimulus for children. The repetitive nature of the nursery rhymes undoubtedly supports language and speech development, but various characteristics of nursery rhymes, specifically pitch interval, meter, phrase length, contour, and harmony, also contribute substantially to the development of language in children.

Into the Woods

Stephen Sondheim’s musicals are considered difficult to perform due to their music and intense themes. Despite the criticism given to his shows, Sondheim remains one of the most influential composers and lyricists of the musical theatre genre. Many characters in Sondheim’s musicals experience real-life obstacles of pride, loneliness, relationships, love, poverty, trust, infidelity, and more. Specifically, the female characters in Sondheim musicals are shown to face these troubles just as much (or more than) their male counterparts. In musicals, female characters are usually classified by voice type (soprano, mezzo-soprano, and alto). Typically, the soprano is a lead role for a “damsel-in-distress” character. However, in Sondheim musicals, the mezzo-soprano is given more of the spotlight and often is the lead female protagonist. In Sondheim’s hands, mezzo-soprano roles become three-dimensional characters. For example, Mrs. Lovett reveals many aspects of her personality in Sweeney Todd. Stephen Sondheim uses complex music to characterize Mrs. Lovett and her mezzo-soprano peers, showcasing their individuality in his musicals.

Over the last couple of decades, there is no arguing that the worship music industry has grown from its days of indie rock bands revitalizing hymns. Christian music has not only expanded in the number of artists, radio broadcasts, fanbase, media attention, and venues, but also in the variety of genres infused with Biblical lyrics. One band that has boosted the Christian music industry during the past fifteen years is Casting Crowns.

The purpose of this project is threefold: 1) to create the Au- dynus, an electric keyboard with broader functionality than a standard electric keyboard which permits extended control in performance and DAW (digital audio workspace) input, 2) to create an informative document outlining the creation process in detail, and 3) to compose a music showcasing characteristics of the instrument, especially those that contrast with a standard keyboard. This keyboard will explore the limits of current keyboards, and will differ from others in that each key will have two alterable MIDI CC (Musical Instrument Digital Interface Constant Control) Parameters. While this device will be somewhat like synthesizers such as the Seaboard, this instrument will more closely mirror a traditional keyboard, making it more appealing to pianists, and furthermore this instrument will be intentionally narrow in scope, giving the user control over two changeable pa- rameters, allowing users to stretch the limits of traditional keyboard playing in their own way. Each key will be able to move forward and backward, increasing or decreasing the volume effortlessly in a hybrid fashion that will combine the capabilities of technological keyboard instruments with traditional, non-technological keyboard instruments, and will furthermore include pressure sensitivity on each key, often used in aftertouch. The physical manipulation of the keys will allow more precise control and awareness of the key positioning, creating greater dynamic control and emulating a wind or string instrument.

This project analyzes Max Steiner’s score from the film Casablanca. I evaluated how the functions of the film score evoke various moods in the film.
Sketches began as an idea that music and drawing are interrelated. “Seeing music” in a way that isn’t just notation can be quite challenging for those without synesthesia, thus making connections between these two art forms seem impossible. However, this piece takes a philosophy used in architectural drawing and representation, applies it to music, and makes basic connections between the two. Marco Frascari, an Italian architect, believed that architectural drawings should exhibit four important qualities: the literal, allegorical, moral, and anagogical. Sketches applies this to music and aims to show that music should also exhibit these four characteristics in a different manner.
