Paintings and Explorations

My senior project consisted of a large series of paintings on canvas. I created seven large scale paintings (36” x 48” size) which involved minimalism, typography, a “painterly” process, and abstraction. It was a series of explorations in working with my own two (physical) hands, rather than working on a computer as is the standard method of working for graphic designers. These paintings were done in hopes that the series would help me further define my artistic style, accumulate a larger body of work, and possibly discover a new form of painting.

DJ Deeluxx Identity Project

A highly competitive industry that requires constant marketing is the industry of DJ entertainment. DJ Deeluxx was lacking an identity system to effectively promote its business. Thus came about this project to design an identity that would promote the business and meet both the needs and expectations of the client. The design procedure entailed general research of the DJ industry to gain familiarity and inspiration. A major portion of the design process required continuous sketching and studies with type and color prior to the digital work. The process required persistent sketching and digital refinement, sketching and refining again, at which the cycle continued until the objective goals were met. As a result of this intensive process, I achieved designing a logo and business identity that well represents my client’s image and business. I have learned that the research involved was crucial to the development of the logo that drove the rest of the identity. This project in hopes will immensely help promote the DJ Deeluxx business.

In this senior paper I wanted to work on marketing a chair through different angles of design. These angles include logo design, photography, packaging design and a few advertising works to go along. I felt that the broad parts of this project would help in creating a portfolio piece that I have designed from the ground up. In reading my paper you will see the different approaches that were made and what ones worked. In all the pieces I am going to have to research to find the best way to approach these made up problems.

Visually Sound: An Exploration of Design + Music, is a book comprised of a series of works exploring the relationship of design and music. There are four compositions which are inspired by four different songs: “Wake Up” by Arcade Fire, “Chicago Zoo” by The Cool Kids, “Reptilia” by The Strokes, and “Sleepyhead” by Passion Pit. Within the book are the lyrics to each song, and my thoughts on my ideas behind each of the four designs.

This report contains my research, process, results and personal discoveries. My documentation includes visual research in the form of digital mood boards, inspirational work from other designers, magazines, and books. It also includes research of digital designing techniques for Adobe programs via magazine and video tutorials.
